Project Overview

“Filling the Gap” was a six-week community-based programme designed to support Eritrean and Somali single mothers in Westminster in developing the digital skills and confidence needed to engage with online services and strengthen their independence.

Funded by Westminster City Council and delivered by Kulan Somali Organisation (KSO) at the Beethoven Centre, the project addressed the growing need for accessible, culturally relevant digital inclusion support for underserved groups.

Ubuntu Pledge was brought in to facilitate all digital skills training sessions, designing and delivering a hands-on programme tailored to the participants’ unique needs, while KSO led on outreach, coordination, and mentorship.

What we did

Ubuntu Pledge spearheaded the digital skills training for the program, offering structured, practical, and empowering sessions. Kulan Somali Organisation (KSO) complemented this by providing ongoing Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) and cultivating a culturally safe learning environment for all participants.

Key Program Elements:

  • Basic Digital Skills: Ubuntu Pledge taught participants how to confidently use computers and smartphones, set up email accounts, browse the internet, and access vital online services.
  • Online Safety & Social Media: Training also covered crucial topics like online safety, privacy settings, scam prevention, and responsible social media use, all tailored to family needs.
  • Cultural Mentorship & IAG: KSO mentors offered personalized support, helping women overcome challenges and build trust in their learning journey.

This collaborative, community-rooted approach ensured participants felt fully supported and empowered. Many began with little to no digital experience and significant anxiety. However, by delivering training in trusted local spaces and adjusting the pace to their comfort levels, Ubuntu Pledge successfully built confidence and fostered an encouraging learning environment.
