Bridging the Digital Divide

Ubuntu Pledge collaborated with the Lancaster West Neighbourhood Team to deliver an 8-week digital inclusion programme focused on bridging the digital divide within the Lancaster West Estate and the wider North Kensington community.

Project Overview

Ubuntu Pledge collaborated with the Lancaster West Neighbourhood Team to deliver an 8-week digital inclusion programme focused on bridging the digital divide within the Lancaster West Estate and the wider North Kensington community.

Some parents initially lacked confidence in using devices or feared technology’s impact on their children. Through consistent coaching and encouragement, these concerns were turned into growth opportunities, with families embracing digital tools as allies rather than threats.

The initiative targeted 10 participants (comprising 3 families and 2 individuals) and aimed to address pressing challenges around digital literacy, online safety, and family communication in the digital space. With a focus on both parents and children, the project sought to build digital confidence, create safer online habits, and strengthen relationships through shared learning experiences.

What we did

To tackle these challenges, Ubuntu Pledge designed a family-centred, holistic programme that combined one-to-one mentorship, group workshops, and interactive activities tailored to both adults and young people:

  • Digital Coaching for Parents
  • Personalised coaching sessions helped parents overcome specific digital skill gaps. Training covered basic computer use, email, online safety, and understanding social media platforms to help them support their children more effectively.
  • Online Safety Mentorship for Children
  • Children received one-to-one guidance and interactive support to learn how to engage with technology safely. Sessions focused on cyberbullying, privacy, responsible social media behaviour, and critical thinking online.
  • Family-Centred Collaborative Learning
  • Joint sessions for parents and children created space for families to explore digital tools together, promote communication, and build shared understanding around online activity and boundaries.

Over the 8 weeks, our team delivered more than 50 hours of tailored coaching and mentorship, building trust, confidence, and stronger tech awareness within the family unit.

Impact

  • 9 total participants engaged (3 families + 2 individuals)
  • 100% of parents reported increased confidence using digital tools
  • 80% of children demonstrated improved online safety awareness
  • 65% increase in family engagement with technology and digital discussions
  • All families reported feeling more connected and confident in navigating online platforms together

Following the programme’s success, Ubuntu Pledge is exploring ways to scale this model with more families across North Kensington and similar communities. There is growing interest in developing digital family hubs and building a network of community-based digital mentors to sustain the momentum created
